1. CALL TO ORDER AND PLEDGE TO THE FLAG

Mr. Perugino called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The group joined in the Pledge to the Flag.

2. ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA

MOTION: To adopt the agenda as presented. Motion Martin Wetzel seconded Raymond Engle, motion passed unanimously.

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

MOTION: To approve the minutes of the regular meeting of May 9, 2012. Motion Daniel Santorso secondedDaniel Gentile, motion passed unanimously.

4. PRESENTATION

Dr. Tenney announced Annsue DiVenere as Plymouth’s Teacher of the Year.

Representative Whit Betts made the following presentations:

1. A citation on behalf of the General Assembly to the Plymouth School District in recognition of winning 2 awards from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency for efforts to reduce energy usage in the schools as an Energy Star Leader.

2. A citation to Marty Sandshaw for his leadership.

3. A citation to Mr. Brencher, in recognition of placing first for best outstanding documentary at the Connecticut Student Innovation Expo, the winning video “Terryville Living Green”.

4. A citation to Dr. Anthony Distasio in recognition of your retirement as Superintendent of the Plymouth Public Schools for your positive impact on a countless number of students throughout the years.

5. PUBLIC COMMENTS REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS

6. COMMUNICATIONS

Letters from Energy Educators along with certificates from the Federal Government were placed in each Board Members packet.

8. NEW BUSINESS

A. End of the Year Transfer of Funds

MOTION: To authorize the Superintendent of Schools to make the necessary transfers and expenditures to close the books as of June 30, 2012, and to expend all appropriate funds for the fiscal year 2011 – 2012. MotionRaymond Engle seconded Martin Wetzel, motion passed unanimously.

B. Participation in the National School Lunch Program

MOTION: To approve the authorization of the administration to participate in the National School Lunch Program for the 2012 – 2013 school years. Motion Gerard Bourbonniere seconded Anthony Orsini, motion passed unanimously.

C. Authorization to Hire

MOTION: To authorize the Superintendent of Schools to hire personnel, except administrators, during the months of July and August in conjunction with the Personnel Subcommittee Chair. Motion Martin Wetzel secondedDaniel Santorso, motion passed unanimously.

D. Approval of Food Service Provider

MOTION: To approve Chartwell’s Food Service Provider to again provide the food services operations for the Plymouth Public Schools beginning July 1, 2012 and continuing through June 30, 2013. Motion Anthony Orsiniseconded Raymond Engle, motion passed unanimously.

E. Appointments

MOTION: To appoint Patricia O’Brien to the position of Nurse at Harry S. Fisher Elementary School effective August 27, 2012. Motion Gerard Bourbonniere seconded Martin Wetzel, motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To appoint Roberta Lanning to the position of Nurse at Terryville High School effective August 27, 2012. Motion Anthony Orsini seconded Daniel Santorso, motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To appoint Timothy Hoffman, to the position of Social Studies Teacher at Terryville High School effective August 27, 2012. Motion Daniel Santorso seconded Gerard Bourbonniere, motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To appoint Damian Coggshall, to the position of grade 7 Computer Technology Teacher at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School effective August 27, 2012. Motion Martin Wetzel seconded Daniel Santorso, motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To appoint Jessica Wilson, to the position of Mathematics Teacher at Terryville High School effective August 27, 2012. Motion Gerard Bourbonniere seconded Raymond Engle, motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To appoint Amanda Curtiss, to the position of Mathematics Teacher at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School effective August 27, 2012. Motion Anthony Orsini seconded Gerard Bourbonniere, motion passed unanimously.

F. Modification of the 2012 – 2013 Budget

MOTION: To modify the 2012 – 2013 budget for the Plymouth Board of Education by increasing the amount by $133,556 for a total $23,129,675, as modified at the Plymouth Board of Finance Meeting on May 17, 2012 and approved at the May 23, 2012 referendum, and to allocate the additional funds as follows: (1) To keep the Mathematics Coach for the school district at $80,239 and (2) to add $53,321 to the Medical Reserve Fund. MotionMartin Wetzel seconded Daniel Santorso, motion passed unanimously.

G. Acceptance of Building Projects

MOTION: To accept the following building projects as completed: (a) school building project 111-0050 Eli Terry Jr. Middle School Conversion and (b) school building project 111-0051, Harry S. Fisher Elementary School Upgrades. Motion Gerard Bourbonniere seconded Daniel Santorso, motion passed unanimously.

H. Approval of Positions

MOTION: To approve a contract for the Technology Director for the Town of Plymouth and Plymouth Board of Education, and the addition of one Technology Specialist position funded by the Town of Plymouth as discussed in the Negotiations Subcommittee. Motion Martin Wetzel seconded Anthony Orsini, motion passed unanimously.

I. Resignation

Dr. Distasio accepted the resignation of Diane Richards, Family & Consumer Science Teacher at Terryville High School effective June 14, 2012.

9. BOARD MEMBER/COMMITTEE REPORTS

  1. Curriculum – Mrs. Kulesa, Chair

In lieu of Mrs. Kulesa’s absence Mr. Berube reported on the following:

The Curriculum Subcommittee met on June 6, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. The following items were discussed: (a) Summer School Program – free program for selected students in grades K-5; and a variety of courses will be offered at Terryville High School during their summer school for credit recovery. Summer School for high school students is a tuition based program; (b) Curriculum Standards – a draft form of the Science Curriculum Standards has been released by the State Department of

Education and will be used to begin writing our Science Curriculum in preparation of the implementation of the Common Core State Standards; c) K-2 Curricula Integration – Curriculum Development based on the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and Language Arts is in process. The new curriculum documents are scheduled to be completed by the end of the next school year; and (d) Textbook and Curriculum Cycle – Dr. Tenney is developing a new textbook purchase cycle based on the implementation of the Common Core State Standards that will be presented to the Curriculum Subcommittee in the fall.

  1. Facilities – Mr. Engle, Chair

No Report, however, Mr. Engle asked that the Superintendent send a letter to the Chairman of Planning & Zoning and the Mayor asking what needs to be done to receive the Certificate of Occupancy for Plymouth Center School.

C. Finance – Mr. Bourbonniere, Chair

The Finance Subcommittee met prior to the Board of Education Meeting and reviewed the accounts by facilities report for the month of May and moved that it be forwarded to the Town of Plymouth Board of Finance.

MOTION: To approve the transfer funds as discussed in the Finance Subcommittee. Motion Martin Wetzel,seconded Anthony Orsini motion passed unanimously.

Mr. Berube reported all items were addressed under new business.

With the school year ending, everything is continuing to move very smoothly and safely and we’ll be ready for the next school year on the same note.

10. ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS/REQUESTS/INFORMATION

Mr. Parenti, Director of Pupil Personnel

The year is beginning to wind down with PPT’s and IEP’s being finalized. Mr. Parenti thanked everyone for making him feel welcome and wished the individuals in his department a happy and restful summer.

Dr. Tenney – Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Items were handled under the Curriculum Subcommittee Report.

Mr. Lovely

Wonderful town, great people and school system, staff and administrators, it’s been a great please to be here in Plymouth and Mr. Lovely thanked everyone for their support.

Mr. Trudeau, Director of Technology

Mr. Trudeau thanked Jeff and Connor and Mr. Falcone for helping with the Plymouth 16th live broadcast tonight. There are many things taking place during the summer months i.e. moving computers and hardware. A letter was received from the State of Connecticut Department of Technology Education officially accepting 2012 – 2015 Technology Plan. Mr. Trudeau indicated he is looking forward to working with the Town of Plymouth as we move forward.

Mr. Sangotatta, Business Manager

The Finance Subcommittee met earlier in the evening and reviewed the accounts by facilities report for the month of May. Budget and line items look good. On the buildings and grounds side, there are a number of summer projects.

Dr. Distasio, Superintendent

Dr. Distasio thanked Representative Betts and State Senator Welch for the beautiful plaque.

Two athletes from Terryville High School Track and Field team took home top honors at the Class S Championships in New Britain. Alyssa Roland won her first State Championship in the 100 meters hurdles and took 7th place in the long jump; Corie Scharpf won her 5th State Championship in the high jump; Brooke Lewryplaced 5th in the high jump and the girls’ 4 x 100 meter relay consisting of Roland, Scharpf, Kristen Mazzini and Erika Zalewski, took 7th place. The Lady Roos finished in 10th place overall.

Tyler Raymond took 7th place in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs.

Michelle Luba, Social Worker and George Bikakis, Social Studies Teacher received the Zukowski Family Foundation Award.

On behalf of the Plymouth Board of Education, Dr. Distasio thanked administrators, teachers, students and staff for another wonderful and productive school year. He also thanked the administrators and staff for their support throughout the district. He thanked Mr. Lovely for his 10 years of service to the Plymouth Public Schools and wished him a very long, healthy and happy retirement.

In closing, Dr. Distasio thanked the members of the Plymouth Board of Education for their support throughout the year. Many thanks were extended for their continued support, encouragement and caring and for all they do for the kids of our community.

Dr. Distasio thanked Mrs. Piskorski for all she does in keeping the Board and him

organized.

11. PUBLIC COMMENTS REGARDING AGENDA/NON AGENDA ITEMS

Kim Jobbagy, 10 Frankie Lane, Terryville

Ms. Jobbagy asked the following question: Regarding Chartwells – Is it truly a continuation of the contract because she was under the impression it was a 5 year contract?

Dr. Distasio indicated he would be in touch with her with a response because this portion of the meeting was for public comment and not for questions and answers.

12. BOARD LIAISONS TO SCHOOLS

Mr. Perugino – Harry S. Fisher Elementary School

June 5 Grade 4 State Fair

Mr. Bourbonnire – Terryville High School

The last meeting took place on June 7th. Everything looks good for the aftergrad party. Currently eighty-three students will be attending. Next year’s president for the PTSA Aftergrad is Lisa Jaworski and treasurer will be George Smith. The PTSA is still looking for someone for a secretary to take minutes of the meetings. Mr. Bourbonniere thanked Mr. & Mrs. Borda for a fine job they did with the aftergrad party.

Mr. Orsini– Eli Terry Jr. Middle School

The next PTA meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 29th @ 7p.m. at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School.

Mr. Berube – SEPTA

May 17 Meeting

The following was discussed: SEPTA has 33 members; discussed beginning fundraising efforts earlier; reviewed proposed by-law changes; Melissa Johnson shared with the group what occurred at the PTA Dinner she attended; PTA Reflections Program Theme for next year, “A Magic Moment”; Kim Jobbagy is the new PTA Council President; Annual Summer Picnic to take place on July 21 with a rain date of July 22 @ Cedar Lake from noon to 6 p.m.; Summer Bowling Program for SEPTA Families – up to 15 kids will receive a free game of bowling and shoe rental @ Thomaston Lanes – beginning June 20 – July 18th (every Wednesday except July 4th) beginning @ 1 p.m.; and July 15th – special summer brunch meeting at noon, @ Lori Johnson’s home to prepare for the beginning of school.

Mr. Santorso – CABE

CABE paid off their mortgage. They voted to go forward with their budget.

Mr. Santorso announced he was appointed to the CABE communications subcommittee. Conversations included future plans for the style of communications and the current method of communications, i.e. CABE Journal, brochures regarding the workshops and the website. If anyone has any specific questions, just call CABE. Next meeting is scheduled for September.

Dr. Distasio – PTSA Council

Dr. Distasio reported that the PTSA Council met on May 16th. He thanked the PTSA Council and all of the PTA’s for the work they do in supporting our children.

Mr. Gentile – Congratulations to all of the graduates, Mr. Lovely you will be missed, it’s been a great year, glad to be back on the Board, and to everyone, have a nice summer.
