MINUTES

Present: 

Board: Ray Engle, Patrick Perugino, Roxanne Perugino, Martin Wetzel,Gerard Bourbonniere,
and Karen Kulesa

Excused Absence: Jennifer Zalaski, Leonard Morgan and Dan Gentile

Administrators: Dr. Anthony W. Distasio, Superintendent, Mr. Santogatta, Business Manager;Mr. Lovely, Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Mr. Meehan, Director of Pupil Personnel & Special Education Services and Mr. Trudeau, Director of Technology


1. CALL TO ORDER AND PLEDGE TO THE FLAG

Mr. Engle called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The group joined in the Pledge to the Flag.

2. ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA

MOTION: To adopt the agenda as presented. Motion Roxanne Perugino, seconded Patrick Perugino motion passed unanimously.

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

MOTION: To approve the minutes of the regular meeting of April 8, 2009. Motion Patrick Perugino, seconded Roxanne Perugino, motion passed unanimously.


4. PUBLIC COMMENTS REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS

5. NEW BUSINESS

A. Resignation

Dr. Distasio accepted the resignation of Andrew Bodak, Maintenance Worker, effective April 23, 2009.

B. Childrearing Leave

MOTION: To approve a Childrearing Leave for Jennifer Fowler, grade 1 Teacher at Harry S. Fisher Elementary School from on or about October 9, 2009. Motion Martin Wetzel, seconded Roxanne Perugino motion passed unanimously.

C. Appointment

MOTION: To approve the appointment of Scott Payne to the position of Head Custodian at Plymouth Center School effective May 14, 2009. Motion Gerard Bourbonniere, seconded Roxanne Perugino motion passed unanimously.

D. District Educational Technology Plan
After a brief presentation of the district Educational Technology Plan by Mr. Trudeau, Director of Technology, the following motion was made:

MOTION: To approve the district Educational Technology Plan for July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2012 as presented by the Director of Technology. Motion Roxanne Perugino, seconded Gerard Bourbonniere motion passed unanimously.


6. BOARD MEMBER/COMMITTEE REPORTS

A. Curriculum - Mrs. Kulesa, Chair

The Curriculum Subcommittee met on May 6, 2009. The following items were discussed:
 (1) New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC) Report Overview: Mr. Cerruto and Mrs. Radke presented an overview of the NEASC school report to the committee members. They reported that Terryville High School was awarded continuing accreditation through the 2019 school year. They reviewed sample commendations and recommendation in each of the 7 standards evaluated under the NEASC guidelines. The two areas designated for improvement that need to be
addressed over the next two years are Mission and Assessment. 

(2) Textbook Adoption –High School Social Studies and High School French – Mr. Lovely presented two history books recommended for adoption by Mrs. Newcity, Social Studies Department Chairperson. He also presented the Bien Bit Series, Holt-McDougall Publishers for French I, II, & III, recommended for adoption by Mr. Mabasa, World Language Department Chair.

MOTION: To adopt Glencoe Publishing, World History (Level 2) for grade 9 students and United States History, Part 2 – The American Journey (Level 3) for grade 11 students at Terryville High School. 

Motion Gerard Bourbonniere, seconded Roxanne Perugino motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To adopt the Bien Bit Series, Holt-McDougall Publishers for French I, II, & III for Terryville High School students. Motion Martin Wetzel, seconded Roxanne Perugino motion passed unanimously.

B. Facilities – Mr. Perugino, Chair

Mr. Perugino reported the Facilities Subcommittee met prior to the Board of Education Meeting and discussed a naming of a portion of Terryville High School. Mr. Perugino brought forth the Borkowski Family. After a brief discussion, the subcommittee agreed to bring the following motion before the full Board.

MOTION: To name the Terryville High School Auditorium “The Borkowski Family Auditorium” . Motion Roxanne Perugino, seconded Karen Kulesa. At this time the Chair requested a roll call. Mr. Perugino, Mrs. Kulesa, Mrs. Perugino, Mr. Bourbonniere, and Mr. Wetzel all voted in favor of the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Mr. Perugino also reported: items are progressing at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School, the sign has been installed; he just asked that everyone be patient and the track at the high school is scheduled to be in by the beginning of next year.

Mr. Engle wanted to remind the public that Terryville High School has not been accepted as of yet by the Board of Education.

C. Finance – Mr. Gentile, Chair

In lieu of Mr. Gentile’s absence, Mr. Engle reported the Finance Sub-Committee met prior to the Board of Education Meeting. The April accounts by facilities report was reviewed and will be forwarded to the Town of Plymouth Board of Finance.


D. Negotiations – Mr. Perugino, Chair

An informal meeting was held last week with members of the cafeteria and its union. There will be another informal meeting at a future date.

E. Personnel – Mrs. Perugino, Chair

All matters were addressed under new business.


F. Policy – Mrs. Zalaski, Chair

Mr. Meehan - Director of Pupil Personnel/District Administrator in Charge

There will be a follow-up meeting with respect to the support and improvement plan on June 9, 2009 to be attended by Mr. Meehan, the Superintendent and others.

Mr. Trudeau, Director of Technology

Tonight’s crew: Connor Raymond, Brian Luba and Jeff Telke. Jeff Telke was commended for all the hard work with tonight’s live airing on Plymouth 16. High school morning announcements will be returning. AlertNow – automated attendance calling is in the beginning stages. All districts forms are now at a central location. UVerse – Mr. Trudeau will send public relations contact to all Board Members. The Innovation Academy Expo was amazing – Thank You to Mr. Oleksiw.

Some items discussed: (1) Track behind Harry S. Fisher Elementary School need to be worked on – approximate cost - $5,000; (2) Water leak at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School, repaired after hours on May 8th – no bill yet but estimated cost - $3,500.00.


Dr. Distasio, Superintendent

ƒæ A World War I Veteran’s Day Program was sponsored by Mr. Nave and the Terryville High School Sociology Class on April 20, 2009. The program helped to raise money to restore the WWI Memorial in Washington. Thank you Mr. Nave.

ľ On April 27, 2009 the Mayor organized a World War II Veterans Day which took place at Terryville High School. Conducting the ceremony was Secretary of State, Susan Bysiewicz. The program included the presentation of certificates to the WWII
veterans from Plymouth.

ľ The Foods Class at Terryville High School sponsored the annual Senior Tea at the Lyceum on May 5, 2009. The event was organized by Mrs. Rioux, Mrs. Aiudi and
 Mrs. Gudeczauskas.

ľ Dr. Distasio thanked everyone who supported the budget referendum this year. Special thanks went to: the Plymouth Board of Education members, the Board of Finance, the Mayor and the Town Council.

10. Final Board Comments

Mr. Perugino - (1) Thank you to Mr. Trudeau for a great job on the Technology Plan and (2) thank you to the Board for supporting the name of the auditorium “the Borkowski Family Auditorium”.

Mrs. Perugino – (1) Who will notify the Borkowski Family? (2) Mr. Perugino to notify Felix Borkowski and the Link Family. and (3) A date needs to be set for the dedication.

Mr. Bourbonniere – (1) Thank you to: Mr. Cerruto (NEASC); Mrs. Aiudi for hosting the Leo Conference and Mr. Trudeau for the excellent work on the Technology Plan.

Dr. Distasio – Thank you Mr. Bourbonniere was attending the event in Mrs. Aiudi’s absence.

11. Next Regular Board Meeting

Mr. Engle stated that the next regular Board of Education Meeting will be held on June 10, 2009 at 7 p.m. at Terryville High School.

MOTION: To adjourn the meeting at 7:40 p.m. Motion Patrick Perugino seconded Roxanne Perugino, motion passed unanimously.
